Vitamin K. l a
multivitamin, but he reads labels carefully.
He selects a pill that contains no more than
3,500 IU of vitamin A. In addition, he looks
for a “USP Verified” mark on the bottle (see
sidebar) indicating the dietary supplement
has been voluntarily tested and meets purity,
potency and quality standards.
Nonetheless, not all physicians agree a
multivitamin is beneficial. While Katz typically suggests his patients take vitamin D,
omega- 3 fatty acids and probiotics, he does
not automatically recommend adding a
multivitamin to that list.
“If you are concerned about your nutrient intake, raise the issue with your doctor,”
he says. “It is not a one-size-fits-all scenario.”
“The majority of Americans are not
vitamin or mineral deficient,” Cross says.
“What we are is overfed. We take in too
many calories, and those calories often are
empty calories compared to eating fresh
and wholesome food. Most people are not
vitamin deficient because they eat so much
they ultimately sort of compensate.” C
