YES. Someone put a lot of time and thought
into your gift. They would be hurt if you
weren’t honest with them.

NO. For those who go on to whine about gifts
being a sign of the giver’s love and who are we
to give it away? All I can say is that things are
just that: things. If your love is only represented
by a thing you give someone, your love is a sad
shadow of real love.
Thanks for the holidays
It’s Thanksgiving Day and I am just sitting
down for a break in my marathon cooking and
decided to open my December edition of The
No beating around the bush for correct-
ness from your publisher. [In her column]
Ginnie [Roeglin] used the words “Merry
Christmas and Happy Hanukkah,” not the
careful, less controversial “Happy Holidays.”
This is, after all, Christmas and Hanukkah,
so thank you for saying it.

I began reading [“Fine families, fine
wines,” December 2013] with interest, especially when it stated there are 8,000 wineries
in North America and wine is produced in
all 50 states. I read on, only to find “fine
families” are from foreign lands. The U.S.
produces some of the finest wines in the
world and, apparently, they are not produced
by “fine families.”
It was truly difficult for our wine buyer, Annette
Alvarez-Peters, to narrow the list of outstanding wine families down to five. The article definitely did not mean to convey that there aren’t
some very special wine families in the U.S. The
Connection hopes to be able to profile some of
those interesting stories in future issues.—Ed
“I found the article ‘Season for giving’ [December 2013] in The Costco
Connection very informative on ‘Nine tips for effective philanthropy.’
