WELCOME TO 2016! January is a good time to take
stock. Suze Orman, our longtime financial columnist,
has a plan to help you get on track this year to feel better
about your financial health; read about her tips and her
seven-class online program on page 17. On page 26,
several other financial experts, including Dave Ramsey
(also on page 125), offer advice on becoming debt-free.
For tips and inspiration on improving your physical
health, the For Your Health special section features profiles of Costco members who have transformed their lives
(page 40), as well as articles on motivation (page 46),
Zumba (page 55), fitness apps (page 59), injury treatment
and prevention (page 67) and more.
Diet is another important factor in achieving and maintaining health and fitness.
Low-glycemic foods, such as those high in protein, are associated with greater weight
loss. For more information, plus delicious recipes, turn to page 84.
Winter salads (page 92) and our Farm to Table section, beginning after page 94,
offer a way to keep your diet interesting during the colder months. Costco has become
one of the largest sellers of organic foods in the country. Dennis Knapp and Jeff Lyons,
our senior vice presidents of food and fresh foods, respectively, explain our organic
program, beginning on page 144.
If your home needs a fresh start, be sure to check out our special furniture section,
beginning on page 103. Jennifer Adams offers decorating tips on page 109, our furniture
buyers offer their picks on page 113 and instant savings start on page 114.
Finally, I am embarking upon a new beginning this year. After 25 years with Costco,
including the past 15 years publishing this magazine, I have decided to transition into
retirement this year. I have been honored and blessed to work for this great company
and will truly miss it!
I wish you your own happy new beginnings in 2016. C

IT’S NO WONDER that, according to a Nielsen survey
from last year, these three goals were in the top 10 of
New Year’s resolutions: staying fit and healthy ( 37 percent), losing weight ( 32 percent) and enjoying life to the
fullest ( 28 percent). After all, what’s more precious than
good health?
We planned this month’s Connection with those priori-
ties in mind. In time for the new year and all the possibili-
ties that come with it, we are offering inspirational stories,
practical tips, new ideas and a strong dose of motivation
from Costco members and experts in this issue’s For Your
Health special section, beginning on page 40.
Our collection of fitness success stories, “Lives transformed,” looks at dramatic health
improvements accomplished by Costco members who responded to our call to share their
personal journeys. As you’ll read, many of these members faced significant obstacles in
their lives, but overcame them to meet their health goals.
Our mix of health stories also features several experts who offer professional health
tips. It was exciting to catch up with Costco member Jennifer Widerstrom, one of the trainers on the show The Biggest Loser, to ask her about the keys to weight-loss success, both on
the show and with her personal clients, for our story on page 51. As the story shows, it’s
all about having a bit of courage to take that first step. In other words, nothing ventured,
nothing gained.
On pages 46 and 47, you’ll find several stories with practical tips that you can use as
you embark on your own health kick as the new year begins. Cut out these pages and put
them somewhere handy—odds are that you’ll need them along the way. As “Motivation
mojo” points out, studies show that only 8 percent of the people who set goals for the new
year actually achieve them.
Here’s to your good health in 2016 and beyond. C
