development of the influenza vaccine. The influenza vaccination is the single most effective
tool to prevent influenza at the present (it is
actually mandatory for most health-care professionals). Influenza remains the leading vac-cine-preventable illness in the United States.

Random Acts of Flowers
When I was in the hospital having my first
child, I was amazed, like Mr. Larsen Jay [“Ran-dom Acts of Flowers,” December 2015], how
lonely some new mothers looked without the
[roomful of] beautiful flowers like I had. Some
of these new mothers and their babies were not
being celebrated. My mother helped me to distribute my abundance of beautiful bouquets to
the others who had none.
What surprise and appreciation for such a
small gesture was returned! I encourage everyone who is in such a position while in the hospital or upon leaving to share their flowers, and
I applaud Mr. Jay for continuing that blessing to
countless patients.

Memory lane
[Regarding “From the editor’s desk” in December 2015] I, too, just completed a massive
sorting project of thousands of pictures from
the early days (1930s) to the present.
I have 15 big albums and 12 small albums
sorted and labeled as to date and event (e.g.,
“Kathy and Rich’s wedding June 17, 1995”) as
well as keepsake boxes labeled “Grandparents,”
“Mom,” “trip to Poland,” “Hawaii,” etc. There’s
also a box devoted to pets, one for trains (real
and model—which my husband and I both indulge in as a hobby) and one for beautiful pictures of sunsets, rainbows, clouds and trees.
Each of our eight children received a box of
photos of themselves and their friends, with
copies of our various family photos beginning
in 1970 with our firstborn.
I feel as if I lived my life in retrospect after
this undertaking, and it made me realize how
many family and friends have passed away,
but, most of all, how fortunate we have been
as a family.

What is the
difference bet ween
regular and
premium gasoline?
At Costco, the
only difference
is octane.
Both grades of

contain the same
high level of
detergent additives, so both regular and
premium keep your engine clean and
running like new.
Octane is a stable hydrocarbon molecule
that contains eight carbon atoms.
Octane’s chemical characteristics make it
a reference standard for how gasoline
burns in a spark-ignition engine. More
octane means the fuel burns a split
second slower. High-performance and
turbocharged engines run hotter, so they
need more octane to keep the fuel in sync
with the spark plugs. If the fuel ignites
prematurely due to heat and pressure
instead of the timed spark, you hear a
“knock” that can reduce performance
and possibly damage your engine.
In the U.S., premium gasoline ranges from
91 to 93 octane depending on where in
the country it’s sold. Higher altitudes
need a bit less octane because there is
lower atmospheric pressure.
Costco recommends that you always use
gas with the octane rating speci;ed in
your car’s owners manual. Although
modern engines have computers that can
adjust the ignition timing to match the
octane in your tank, power and
performance may decline. If you paid extra
for a high-performance car, it makes sense
to buy premium gasoline to get all the
power the engine can provide. If your car
speci;es the lower octane grade, save
your money and buy regular gas.
