ABOARD TODAY’S CRUISE ships, travelers will find myriad choices: everything
from Broadway blockbusters to robot bartenders. Grand ships entice with activities,
entertainment and enrichment on every
imaginable level.
Sitting quietly amid this cornucopia of
cruise varieties is another choice: river cruising. With a laid-back attitude and a subtle
style, river cruises combine the nautical joys of
being aboard a ship with the pleasure of visiting a variety of places, but in a completely different way from their oceangoing counterparts.
The look. There’s a notable difference in
the look and feel of a river ship. The average
river vessel boasts far fewer decks than an
ocean ship. You’ll still find a variety of state-
rooms and public areas, but the design allows
the ships to easily cruise along narrow water-
ways, beneath bridges and through canals and
locks. The layout also allows for optimum
viewing of passing landscapes.
The personality. What river ships may
lack in height and heft, they make up for in
comfort and style. Many are downright luxuri-
ous, with grand artwork and exquisite appoint-
ments. Others feature a more casual ambience,
with the comfortable ease and stylish sur-
roundings of a boutique hotel. All feature
modern conveniences and amenities, and the
pampering service of a professional crew. Their
standards of safety, technology and engineer-
ing equal those of the big ocean liners.
The experience. As your ship calls at
historic towns and bustling villages along the
banks of famed rivers such as the Danube, the
Rhine, the Yangtze and the Nile, one step takes
you from ship to shore. Stroll through ancient
places; venture to nearby pubs, bike paths,
vineyards, castles and ruins; or join an excursion, which usually is included in the fare.
Later, take a seat on the sun deck and relax with
a beverage as your ship glides toward, and
along, the next scenic spot. It’s cruising at its
relaxing, tranquil best.
The value. Most river cruises are all-inclusive, with food, beverages, excursions, onboard
gratuities and more included in the fare.
For a refined experience and an enchanting way to explore a variety of ports, rolling on
the river might just be for you.—Jodi Lien,
