Always carry water. Dogs cool off
by panting, not sweating, and can get overheated and dehydrated in warm weather,
especially on long hikes. “Whenever I feel
like I need a drink, my dog probably does
too,” Dr. Sara Williams, a veterinarian, says.
Watch for signs of dehydration, such as
stumbling as if drunk. It is just as important
to stay hydrated in cold weather as well.
Use a harness, not a collar.
Pulling on a dog’s collar can strain his
neck, so use a harness instead. “A harness
that fits around the chest and shoulders is
safer for your dog and gives you better
control over the dog,” Williams says.
Dress up doggie. Flat-coated dogs
like boxers, beagles and Labradors are
more sensitive to cold, as are really young and
really old dogs. Wlliams suggests buying a warm
coat for dogs that don’t have extra body fat for
insulation. Some dogs will also wear boots to
keep their feet warm. “Be sure to introduce the
boots slowly and make it a fun game to put them
on,” she says. “Reward the dog frequently
when first learning to wear the boots.” In
the summer, walking barefoot on hot cement
or asphalt surfaces can burn paws, so
“encourage your dog to run on the softer
grass,” Williams says.—SJT

WHEN DEVELOPING
our Kirkland Signa-
ture™ pet beds, we
take everything into
account: construction,
filling and fabric. The
beds need to be dura-
ble, easy to clean and
comfortable. And they
have to be available
to our members at a
price that is the most
competitive in the market.
The Kirkland Signature 42-inch
round pet bed (Item #705062)
not only meets but exceeds
our expectations. Filled with nine
pounds of 100-percent recycled
fiberfill, this bed offers maximum comfort, support and
loft retention. The inner
liner is baffled to help
keep the fill in place,
and the bed has a
4-inch gusset and a
plush sleeping surface for
added comfort and warmth.
As with all our pet beds, the cover
is made of durable upholstery-grade,
machine-washable fabric designed
to complement any décor, and is
zippered for easy removal.
The large bed is best suited for
dogs 40 pounds and up, and offers
an outstanding value. This winter
you will find pet beds in a selection
of high-quality fabrics, including
faux suede, faux leather, soft plush,
patterned jacquards and heavyweight
woven twill fabrics. You may
be tempted to curl up on one
yourself! C
