from the publisher’s desk
Sandy Torrey
THE NEW FACE you see this month in this space
belongs to me, Sandy Torrey. I’m taking over the publisher’s desk from Ginnie Roeglin, who just retired after a
25-year career at Costco, and who’s probably at this very
moment enjoying time with her two grandchildren. I’d
like to speak for our company here in thanking Ginnie for
her contributions to Costco and for all the things she did
with our members’ best interests in mind.
I’ll use this space each month to point out highlights
in the magazine and to talk about any other interesting
and valuable initiatives going on within the company. In
this issue, you’ll find our cover story on travel guru Peter
Greenberg (page 28) and his first Travel Connection column featuring helpful tips on visiting Walt Disney World in Orlando (page 31). February
is an excellent time to start planning your spring and summer trips before everything
fills up. We hope you take a look at Costco Travel at Costco.com as you start dreaming
of vacation possibilities.
Of course, we couldn’t let February go by without addressing matters of the heart.
It starts with our Creative Cooking feature (page 44) on romantic date nights at home
(complete with recipes to make it work). We’re also featuring The Hershey Company as
a supplier profile (page 62)—what says Valentine’s Day more clearly than chocolate and
those famous Hershey’s chocolate kisses? And our story, “Romancing the tome” (page
79), features tips from authors and publishing experts on how to write that romance
novel you’ve always had in the back of your mind.
On a more serious note, our health story, “Being strong of heart” (page 69) offers
tips on reducing cardiovascular disease, and we offer some heart-healthy seafood recipes
in our Buying Smart feature on Alaska seafood (page 96).
I’m looking forward to sharing news about Costco with you each month in
this column. C

Vice President of Corporate
Marketing and Packaging,
and Publisher of The Costco
Connection.
from the editor’s desk
Tim Talevich
IN THIS ISSUE we’re excited to introduce a new column
that will appear monthly in The Connection: Travel
Connection, written by Peter Greenberg. Greenberg, as
you’ll see from this month’s cover story, is an indefatigable world explorer who produces TV and radio programs, serves as travel editor for CBS News and writes
books (and now an exclusive Connection column) on his
favorite topic: travel.
We thought Greenberg would be a great fit for The
Connection because he’s a Costco member and under-
stands our business approach. But more important, we
wanted to find an accomplished travel writer who could provide smart travel advice
and insider tips about the destinations our members are visiting through Costco Travel.
As somebody who logs more than 400,000 miles in a year, and has traveled to all corners of the world for his shows and books—yet keeps a faithful focus on an Everyman
attitude—Greenberg is eminently qualified.
As to why we are adding a travel column to the magazine, the answer is simple:
Travel is very important for many members, as seen by the steady growth of Costco
Travel, one of the fastest-growing areas at Costco. We’ve been able to apply our highest-possible-quality, best-possible-value approach to travel options such as vacation packages, cruises, rental cars, hotel stays and more. You can get more details on Costco
Travel at Costco.com; click on “Travel” at the top of the page.
I personally love to travel—I wish I could do more of it. Trips are always the best
when they’re affordable and when you have helpful information to make the most
of your limited time in a place. Our Travel Connection column should help you in
both regards. C

Director of The Costco
Connection.
