FROM THE PUBLISHER’S DESK
HAVING GROWN UP in Southern California, I am no stranger to
beach volleyball, and I’ve followed the amazing career of our cover subject, Kerri Walsh Jennings. Whether you’re a volleyball fan or not, you
have to be impressed by the way that she and her longtime former team
partner, Misty May-Treanor, dominated beach volleyball for more than a
decade. I’m rooting for Walsh Jennings, a Costco member, as she competes to qualify for this summer’s Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, and
I think you will too a;er you read our story on page 30.
Our cover story spearheads this issue’s focus on health, including a
special section of articles that we hope will help you to meet your own
health and ;tness goals. ;e section starts with memory tips on page 37;
the author’s advice on remembering people’s names is especially appreciated. On page 39, you’ll ;nd a list of apps that can improve your cognitive
skills, an area we can all focus on as we get older. You’ll also ;nd articles on keeping your knees
healthy, buyers’ picks on hot health products available at your local Costco and more.
June brings Father’s Day, and our story on page 45 suggests some healthy gi;s for dads.
One great gi; is exercise, through items you can purchase, such as a gym membership or an
activity tracker, or through something as simple and treasured as time with your dad doing
something active.
A key Costco goal is supporting our members’ good health. We strive to do this in many
di;erent ways in the warehouses and online at Costco.com: by o;ering healthy fresh foods,
products such as vitamins and supplements, exercise equipment and clothes, and more. We
also o;er health services through our Optical department, Hearing Aid Center and Pharmacy
in the warehouses.
One last important note for June: You’ll ;nd a story on the new Costco Anywhere Visa®
Card by Citi on page 85. Read it for the latest details of this big change. And watch for more
details in next month’s edition of ;e Connection. C
FROM THE EDITOR’S DESK
WELCOME TO OUR June issue, which has a focus on health, as you can
see from our cover story (page 30) and our special “For Your Health”
section (page 37). We place special emphasis on health in ;e Connection
twice a year—in January and June. ;e January timing is obvious: ;e
new year is the traditional time for making resolutions and fresh starts.
Six months later, June presents a midyear opportunity to review and
renew (and jump head;rst into summer).
We are thrilled to feature Kerri Walsh Jennings, the three-time beach
volleyball Olympic gold medalist and Costco member, as our cover story.
As of press time, she was well on her way to qualifying for a ;;h Olympic
Games in Rio de Janeiro—this time with new teammate April Ross. We’ll know a;er June 13,
when the pre-Olympic qualifying competition wraps up.
Our story points out that volleyball was created as a less physical alternative to basketball.
But don’t interpret that as meaning volleyball players are somehow second-tier athletes.
Beach volleyball players at the Olympic level are as tough, talented and strong as any other
athletes in the world of sports; Walsh Jennings has played through dislocated shoulders and
other injuries.
Our reporter, Christina Guerrero, met with Walsh Jennings in Hermosa Beach, California,
in March. ;e Olympian didn’t want to dwell too much on her own accomplishments; instead,
the conversation turned toward her children and husband, and how two world-class athletes
balance their athletic careers with raising a family. And Walsh Jennings was most passionate
about the need to grow the mind and spirit, not just the body.
We made sure to ask this accomplished athlete for health tips for the rest of us. You can
see them on page 32. We hope Walsh Jennings adds another gold medal to her collection later
this summer in Brazil. We took an optimistic approach on our cover design, with a color
motif of gold tones. C
