NOVEMBER 2016 ;e Costco Connection 7
FROM THE PUBLISHER’S DESK
I LIKE TO COOK, when I have the time (which, as most of you probably
know, can be challenging to ;nd). I think I’m pretty good. But I have to
admit: My husband is better in the kitchen than I am. ;is is not a problem, I assure you. As a matter of fact, kitchen skills have no gender bias.
;ere are great male and female chefs whose authority and expertise in
the culinary arts are fueled by passion, inspiration and imagination.
Several of those experts grace this month’s cover story, starting on
page 28, which is perfectly timed to coincide with the upcoming holiday
celebrations, when so many of us put on our cooking caps in order to
create outstanding meals for the family to gather around. Collectively, the
seven recipes these well-known and respected chefs have shared represent an entire meal, salad to dessert, with a little mulled wine thrown in
for good measure. An added dash of fun is the holiday remembrances
they o;er. And, if you pair the recipes with the holiday wine piece on page 42, which features
our regional wine buyers and their favorites and recommendations, you should have a meal
that will dazzle and delight.
If that’s not enough, all of these culinary creators have books coming out that, should you
need additional inspiration, contain enough recipes between their covers to keep you covered
throughout the year.
Food, it’s safe to say, isn’t the only highlight of the holidays. ;ere are, of course, gi;s!
Costco buyers have been working hard to ;nd items for every member of the family, and
you’ll ;nd many great choices in the Holiday Gi; Guide, beginning a;er page 120, as well as
in the Costco.com section that immediately follows. (Be sure to read the article on some of
Costco.com’s “wow” items on page 92.) If you have readers, movie lovers or video gamers in
your life, our special Arts & Entertainment section, beginning on page 63, should provide
plenty of ideas. And to wrap everything up, learn about Costco’s selection of Kirkland
Signature™ wrapping paper, tissue and more on page 96.
From all of us at Costco, have a happy ;anksgiving! C
FROM THE EDITOR’S DESK
WHEN WE SET out to gather the delicious recipes from the top chefs
featured in our cover story this month, we thought it would be fun to ask
them about their favorite holiday traditions. Sure, the recipes presented
here will give you fresh ideas for new dishes to consider preparing for
your family and friends this year. But isn’t food just one reason this time
of year is so special?
A shared meal connects us to people, places and traditions. And perhaps no day exempli;es this more than ;anksgiving. When it comes to
traditions on that day, we had a few as I was growing up. It started with a
quirky annual contest: naming the turkey that would feed a family of 10
kids. ;e meal itself meant enjoying some foods we had only on ;anksgiving, including
homemade pumpkin pie (in the pre-Costco days) and cranberry juice, which was too expensive to a;ord during the rest of the year (again, in the pre-Costco days). But the real excitement
was the occasional arrival of my grandparents and great-uncle, who would make a three-hour
drive to join us. ;at was always very special.
Of course, as a youngster I took the ;anksgiving meal for granted. In my adult years I’m
aware of the expense, time, work, skill and patience required to put a turkey on the table. But
more important, as the number of my past ;anksgivings becomes larger than the future ones,
I’m aware of an essential ingredient that’s not listed anywhere but that goes into a shared meal
with precious family and friends: a pinch of love.
We would enjoy hearing about some of your favorite holiday traditions. Please take a few
minutes to post them on our Facebook page at
facebook.com/Costco. I’m sure they will be
interesting and even unique, and perhaps we can feature a few in next November’s Connection.
Meanwhile, here’s to a happy holiday season for you and your family. We hope Costco can
help make your get-togethers more a;ordable and memorable, starting with one of those great
pumpkin pies. C
