WINTER IS COMING. The dark is upon us.
No, this isn’t dialogue from Game of Thrones
but an advisory on the lights you’ll want to
have in your home. More specifically, we’re
talking about LED lights.
Traditional incandescent bulbs are being
phased out to make way for the more ener-gy-efficient LED, or light-emitting diode,

can be more durable, versatile and longer lasting. “LED lightbulbs have never been more
affordable,” says Jason Harris, Costco hardware
buyer. “And the value at Costco is incredible.”

Watts happening?
When it comes to picking the color of
light you want, there are a lot of choices. For
the warm, soft white light that a traditional
incandescent bulb produces, look for some-
thing around 2,700 K (kelvin is a unit of mea-
sure for temperature) to 3,000 K; 3,500 K to
4, 100 K gives you a cooler, more neutral white
light. If you prefer a blue daylight light, look
in the 5,000 K to 6,000 K range.

Bulb brightness is measured in watts for
incandescent bulbs. But wattage is a measure
of energy used, not brightness. The way to
figure out the brightness of LED bulbs is to
look at the lumens. The higher the lumens,
the brighter the bulb. Use the chart at right to
help you buy the brightness you need for the
fixtures you have.
