IN THE WAKE of the October 2015 EMV
liability shift, some businesses are seeing a
rise in chargebacks, or disputed charges.
Fraudsters are targeting small to midsize
businesses that have not yet upgraded to
EMV-enabled point-of-sale (POS) devices
in their stores, making it easier to commit
card-present fraud.
Businesses that are not EMV compliant are now financially liable for fraudulent purchases, whether made through a
skimming device or a counterfeit card,
and many are feeling the pain of an
increased number of chargebacks.

EMV technology mitigates the risk of
card-present counterfeit and lost or stolen
card fraud. Businesses were advised to implement an EMV-enabled solution to accept chip
cards by October 1, 2015, or be financially
liable for fraudulent activity that could have
been avoided with an EMV solution.
Businesses that haven’t adopted EMV-enabled POS devices have become targets for
various forms of card fraud, as alluded to earlier. Sticking with older technology may make
you prone to fraudulent purchases. Out with
the old, in with the new.
If you haven’t upgraded yet, Elavon may
be able to help. Go to costcopaymentprocess

FROM AMERIPRISE
AUTO & HOME INSURANCE
IF YOU HAVE a new car on your Christmas
list, Costco Services provider Ameriprise
Auto & Home insurance has some tips to
help you through the process.
1. Make a list of vehicles you’ve seen
on the road that you like or have read are
recommended vehicles. Are you looking for
something with ample storage room for
family items or sports equipment? Looking
for fuel efficiency? Look for a car that meets
your needs and is fun to drive.
2. Consider your budget and set a
spending limit based on your ability to pay
now and in the future. How much can you
afford to spend? Are you putting money
down? What monthly payment are you pre-
pared to make? Are there any amenities you
consider must-haves? Will your car insurance
rates change?
3. Research the value of your current
vehicle and decide whether you will trade it in
or sell it privately. What you receive for a
trade-in may differ from what you receive
from a private sale, which could affect your
down payment and/or car payments.
4. Research car dealerships in your
area. Does the dealership advertise the lowest
price? Will they incorporate maintenance with
the purchase of a new or used car? Does the
dealer offer auto loans or financing? If you are
buying from a private party, use online sites to
check the seller’s rating and find out if the seller
has ever been subject to complaints. Ask for
details about the vehicle’s maintenance history
and take it for a test drive in different kinds of
weather, road and traffic conditions. And, of
course, check with the Costco Auto Program
first for prearranged pricing and no hassles.
5. Decide on the best time to buy a
new vehicle. Only you can make this decision; however, certain times are better, such as
at the end of summer, at the month’s end
when inventory is assessed or at the close of
the model year—or even at the end of the
day—if you have your finances prearranged
and know which car you’d like.
6. Be sure you have the proper insurance coverage once you buy a car. If you
don’t already have an insurer, check out
Ameriprise Auto & Home Insurance. Go to
ameriprise.com/costcomembers or call 1-888-
404-5365.
