On January 15, 2009, photos of an airplane that landed in the Hudson River captivated the world. Seconds after takeoff, a flock of geese struck US Airways Flight 1549, rendering the engines useless. A mere
208 seconds elapsed from takeoff until the plane landed in the water. All 155
aboard—passengers and crew—survived. The landing, called the “Miracle on
the Hudson,” meant instant fame for pilot
