IF YOU ARE pregnant or thinking about getting
pregnant, focusing on your health can help you
have a healthy baby. You should see your doctor
before getting pregnant to discuss any medical
conditions that could affect pregnancy. Once
you are pregnant, regular prenatal visits can
help to prevent complications.
At your first prenatal visit, your doctor
will assess your health, do a physical exam,
give you tips to stay healthy during your pregnancy and answer any questions you have.
Later prenatal visits will monitor your health,
including blood pressure and weight gain,
and make sure the baby is growing and developing normally.
Maintaining a healthy lifestyle is important
for the development of your baby. Eating a
well-balanced diet will provide the nutrition
needed for your baby to grow. Additionally, a
daily prenatal vitamin with at least 400 micrograms of folic acid can help prevent major birth
defects of the brain and spine, according to the
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
(CDC). Your doctor may recommend regular
exercise to help maintain a healthy weight and
prevent gestational diabetes.
Harmful substances that are consumed
during pregnancy can be passed on to the baby.
Caffeine should be limited during pregnancy,
and smoking, alcohol and “street” drugs should
be stopped. These harmful substances can
contribute to low birth weight, premature birth
and birth defects. Contact your health care
provider for resources to help you quit.
Pregnant women and babies are also more
likely to get infections such as the flu and
whooping cough. You can help prevent the
spread of germs by washing your hands often,
avoiding people who are sick and making sure
you are up to date on your vaccinations.
The CDC recommends a flu shot and a
whooping cough vaccine (Tdap: tetanus, diph-
theria and pertussis) with each pregnancy.
Ideally, you should receive the whooping
cough vaccine between the 27th and 36th week
of pregnancy. This maximizes the protective
effects of the vaccine and helps prevent the
spread of whooping cough to your newborn.
Close contacts such as siblings, grandpar-
ents and caregivers should also be immunized
against flu and whooping cough to help pro-
tect your baby. Check with your Costco phar-
macist to find out more about the flu shot and
which vaccine-dosing schedule is right for
you. The vaccines for flu and whooping cough
are covered by most insurance plans. Costco
provides immunizations to adults.
For more information, visit the CDC web-
site (
cdc.gov), which has resources to help you
plan a healthy pregnancy.
