8 The Costco Connection MAY 2017
DEBATE GOES ON
In response to the April debate, “Are we ready for
extraterrestrial contact?”
NO Any species advanced enough to reach us
would likely see our backwardness as reason
enough to, at best, avoid us.
—Jun Ahn,

YES We are ready since we are an evolved society
with progressive technology and medicine.
—Ana Loukas,
facebook.com/Costco
YES I’m pretty sure I saw a Martian at the
Teterboro [N.J.] Costco waiting in line for samples
... and then later eating a brisket sandwich.

FEEDBACK
All hail Costco’s outdoor furniture!
My wife and I bought a five-piece set of patio
furniture from Costco with the same “all-weather
woven resin wicker” composition that I see in the
current magazine for the Santa Fe and San Marino
lines [“The great outdoors,” March 2017].
I don’t usually get impressed enough with
patio furniture to tell a company about it, but the
way it weathered the recent severe storms in the
Dallas area had me astounded. Our area got hit
with golf-ball-size hail. Our neighborhood saw
cars with smashed windows and pockmarks,
skylights and windows broken, and almost everyone’s roof on our street needs to be replaced.
It was the northwest side of our house that
took a beating. Screens ripped, wood fence damaged, weather stripping cracked, gutters severely
dented, etc.
Our Costco patio furniture was on that same
side of the house, and as I cleaned up the mess
the next morning I was amazed to see that the
wicker furniture didn’t have even the smallest
nick or scratch. My neighbors were amazed as
well, given the amount of damage we all have seen
to items you would consider to be much stronger
than wicker.
We have always liked the look and easy-to-clean aspects of our Costco patio furniture, but I
guess the adjective of “bulletproof” needs to be
added to the list!

Reading to toddlers
“Quick tips for reading to toddlers” [“Reading
ready,” April 2017] missed an important point. I
learned from a wise college professor that reading
to toddlers should always be done slowly. They are
just learning ho w to form words and put together
sentences. Fast reading just confuses them.
—Gerry Gilberg, St. Louis, Missouri
As a retired kindergarten teacher, I was happy
to see Mary Barberio’s “Reading ready” article.
It is never too soon to start! To develop comprehension skills, take time as you read to your child
to ask them questions about the story and what
they think might happen next.
—Jerri Ellen Sheeler, Southport, North Carolina
Fido’s oral care
When we first rescued our 15-pound Shih Tzu–
schnauzer mix, I found it difficult to brush his
teeth with a manual toothbrush—what a hassle
[“Caring for your dog’s pearly whites,” April 2017].
So I used my extra Sonicare toothbrush (from
Costco), and it didn’t take him long to adapt. How
much easier and thorough it was. Just let the
Sonicare toothbrush do the job. He lies on his side
with his head on a rolled pillow for two minutes,
rolls over to the other side for another two and
we’re done.

ADVERTISING
AND PRODUCTS
All ads indicate whether a
product is available in the warehouse, on Costco.com or both.
Products are scheduled to be
available during The Connection’s
month of publication and are
noted as in warehouse “early in
month” (1st to 10th), “
mid-month” (11th to 21st) or “late
in month” (22nd to 31st). Shop
early in the month for the best
selection of seasonal items.
Costco.com carries many of the
products available at the warehouses, and offers thousands of
additional items, including line
extensions and supplemental
products. Prices are usually not
listed because they have not
been finalized at the time of
printing and may vary from
one part of the country to
another due to shipping costs.
We hope members know to
check Costco first when comparison shopping. To keep prices
low, Costco does not offer a
telephone service allowing
members to call in for prices
or product availability.
