CHILDREN’S Miracle Network Hospitals
(CMN Hospitals) raises money, often ;;
at a time, for local children’s hospitals to
fund treatments and health services, purchase medical equipment and provide charitable care for families. CMN Hospitals has
;;; member hospitals that provide ;; million treatments each year to children in the
U.S. and Canada, per childrensmiraclenet
workhospitals.org. Costco has raised more
than ;;;; million since beginning its partnership with
CMN Hospitals in ;;;;.
In support of Costco’s
efforts, Ameriprise Auto
& Home Insurance also
donates ;; to CMN Hospitals
for every eligible auto insur-
ance quote during the month
of May.* “We are honored to play a role in
Costco’s support of Children’s Miracle
Network Hospitals,” says Lisa Jossart, vice
president of Marketing and Alliances for
Ameriprise. “We’re incredibly proud that
we’ve donated over ;;;;,;;; since we
started. This year, with the help of Costco
members, we are aiming to break the mil-
lion-dollar mark.”
Here are a few stories from families who
have been helped by CMN Hospitals.
Milly
When Costco member Sue Hamilton
adopted ;-month-old Milly in ;;;;, she
was shocked to wind up in the emergency
room with her just ;; days after bringing
her home. In order to save Milly’s life, the
hospital had to fly her to Children’s Hospital
and Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska,
a two-hour drive away.
Milly was diagnosed with pulmonary
hypoplasia, or underdeveloped lungs.
Hamilton says that what would be a mild
cold for the average person could actually
send Milly into respiratory distress,
requiring ventilation support in the intensive care unit (ICU). Milly has been to the
ICU many times and has also been diagnosed with a host of other conditions.
Hamilton says that without the support
and donations from CMN Hospitals, she
doesn’t know where Milly would be today.
“Without this support, Children’s would
not be able to do
what they do for
kids like Milly,”
says Hamilton,
who adds that
Milly still requires
the help of specialists and even planned
hospitalizations. “We definitely feel Milly
is going in the right direction toward a
healthier tomorrow.”
Elijah
CMN Hospitals has also helped ;-year-old Elijah, son of Costco employee Ed
Hagstrom and his wife, Jennifer. At ; years
old, he was diagnosed with stage ; liver
cancer that had spread to both lungs. In one
year, he has undergone multiple rounds of
chemo and had one surgery to remove the
original tumor, which also removed ;;
percent of his liver.
“We had taken Elijah to the pediatrician

the week prior to his diagnosis and were told
it was just a fever that would pass. It was only
Seattle Children’s Hospital that got the diag-
nosis correct,” says Hagstrom, adding that
Elijah’s medical team has been nothing
short of amazing. “They help comfort and
distract the children during painful proce-
dures. We have also had some amazing
nurses who have advocated for Elijah during
pivotal moments; some have even played
games with Elijah on their breaks.”
Elijah’s dad reports that the hospital
even replaced a Nintendo DS that Elijah
had accidentally vomited on due to the
effects of his treatments. “I believe that
gift was probably a result of all the dona-
tions [Costco] gives to CMN Hospitals,”
says Hagstrom. “[The doctors] have lis-
tened to our concerns and have been
patient with our fears. [They] have been
very reassuring that everything is going to
work out OK for Elijah.”
Titus, Silas and Samuel
Costco employee Jennifer Miller’s family has also benefited from the care and
compassion of CMN Hospitals donors. Her
triplets were born at ;; weeks, weighing only
;.; pounds each. In a publication for Cook
Children’s Medical Center in Fort Worth,
Texas, where the triplets stayed in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), Miller said
her babies were clinging to life. Two of her
boys, Titus and Silas, were in the NICU for
;; days, and Samuel stayed for ;;; days. But
today, she says, the boys are thriving with
no visible lasting effects of their early birth.
“Not only did I feel that my boys were
cared for, but I too felt cared for, and, hon-
estly, that was quite unexpected,” Miller
writes. “The boys had a private room, spe-
cifically designed for triplets, where we were
able to stay with them day or night, and [it]
made our situation more bearable.”
As Hamilton says, “As far as we are con-
cerned, you are our champions!” C
Milly has been able to access
life-saving treatment, thanks
to donations from Children’s
Miracle Network Hospitals.
