Turns out he has a friend who regularly
hosts a midcentury supper club potluck,
featuring recipes from the ;;;;s and ;;;;s.
“Combining all that I’ve experienced
from my own antique shopping, along with
my friend’s supper club and the success of
Mad Men, I noticed there was a movement,
and we had a moment to bring [these books]
back,” Phirman tells The Connection.
So, he and a colleague traveled to the
Betty Crocker Archives at General Mills in
Minneapolis, where they spent the day
Betty starting in ;;;;.
“It started mostly with
housewives asking what they
should cook for their mother-in-law! The company created Betty
Crocker as a name—and later a
face—and to answer these letters.
Over time, the brand evolved into
what it is today,” he says.
The classic Entertaining with
Betty is also available. (Item ;;;;;;;;;

I WOULD be hard-pressed
to name anything more
charming than cookbooks
from the ;;;;s and ';;s.
From the illustrations to
the recipes, old cookbooks
offer a peek into a time
that feels both foreign and
impossibly delightful.
So I was especially excited to ;nd Outdoor Cooking with Betty,
from Houghton Mi;in Harcourt. Originally
published in ;;;;, this book has the same
cover and recipes as the original version. It
describes how to prepare outdoor feasts and
includes recipes for meat, ;sh, sandwiches,
desserts and more.
Wanting to know more about why the
publisher had decided to reprint this book,
I queried James Phirman, national account
manager for Houghton Mi;in Harcourt.
Phirman says he loves the emotional
response he gets when ;ipping through old
cookbooks and seeing what life was like
from a food and entertaining perspective.
