10 The Costco Connection SEPTEMBER 2017
DEBATE GOES ON
In response to the August debate, “Are shorter
school days a good idea?”
NO I think that days should be longer to allow
for longer breaks like recess and lunch. Classes
such as music, art and gym could be longer also.
[Kids’] brains need that to recharge.
—Amy Johnson Klein, from
facebook.com/Costco
YES Shorter school days and a longer school year.

FEEDBACK
Memorable teachers
Regarding “Head of the class,” August ;;;;:
Gas, Kansas, ;;;;. My ;rst- and second-grade
teacher, Viola Holten, could not walk due to the
e;ects of polio, and she spent most of the day
in a wheelchair. Nevertheless, every morning,
when she led her class in the Pledge of
Allegiance, she would struggle to her feet, lock
the shiny metal braces on her legs that were
hinged at the knee, face the ;ag with one hand
over her heart and recite the pledge. All the
while, she would keep her balance, albeit shaking, and remain upright by holding onto a chair.
This scene was repeated every morning, and
it made a profound and long-lasting impression
on me that has remained a vivid memory all
these years, including four in the U.S. Air Force.
Every time I hear our song and see our ;ag waving in the sky, I think of Miss Holten. She knew
what an incredible nation she was saluting, having lived through the Depression and World War
II, and she passed that gratitude on to her class
every day.

Alternative uses
We loved the article on innovative uses for
general o;ce supplies [“The secret life of o;ce
products,” July ;;;;]. One of our favorite o;ce
gadgets is the versatile binder clip. We throw
several in our luggage when traveling. They are
great for pinning the bedroom curtains shut to
keep out that little stream of light in the morn-
ings and for clipping snack bags shut. At home, I
use them in quilting to keep the binding
attached while I hand-sew it on.

Clothing at Costco and on Costco.com
I just received my August Connection today
and [enjoyed] the fall clothing preview [“Fall
fashion”]. I was lucky in going to my closest
[Costco warehouse] today and ;nding the women’s travel pants. I love them!
—Sandy Marshall, North Fort Myers, Florida
We’ll always have Paris (at Costco)
My Dutch-American wife and I lived in the
Netherlands for over ;; years, during which
time our youngest daughter attended university
in Paris. We had many delightful visits to Paris
and France. So it is with some experience that I
can tell you that when I eat a Costco baguette, I
close my eyes and feel that I am back in Paris.
They are as close to a Parisian baguette as I have
ever tasted. We send all our friends to Costco for
their baguettes. Well done, Costco!

ADVERTISING
AND PRODUCTS
All ads indicate whether a
product is available in the
warehouse, on Costco.com
or both. Products are scheduled to be available during
The Connection’s month of
publication and are noted as
in warehouse “early in month”
(1st to 10th), “mid-month”
(11th to 21st) or “late in month”
(22nd to 31st). Shop early in the
month for the best selection of
seasonal items. Costco.com
carries many of the products
available at the warehouses,
and offers thousands of additional items, including line
extensions and supplemental
products. Prices are usually not
listed because they have not
been finalized at the time of
printing and may vary from one
part of the country to another
due to shipping costs. We hope
members know to check Costco
first when comparison shopping.
To keep prices low, Costco does
not offer a telephone service
allowing members to call in for
prices or product availability.
