teachers who may not realize the destructive
nature of school bullying on the victims.
School bullying is a No. ; problem in our
country, and often it occurs under the radar.
The victim may be too young to even verbalize or identify why they are showing symptoms of depression.

Adopting a dog
I agree with all that was stated about
buying a puppy online—it’s always buyer
beware [“Paws before buying,” September
;;;;]. If you get a rescue [dog] from a
Humane Society or a rescue organization,
make sure they have vetted the dog. They
should have done temperament testing
(how the dog does with other dogs, animals
and people), given it vet checkups and
treated any illnesses it has.
However, the best place to look for a
purebred dog is the American Kennel Club
website ( akc.org). They have breeders of
merit who have gone through a rigorous
screening to be listed. They are breeders
who will have done all the health checks and
raised the pups in the best possible environ-
ment to give the buyer a well-socialized and
healthy puppy. They will also be there to
answer any question and mentor the buyer,
and you will make a new friend.
Also, ;nd out where there are local dog
shows, and go talk to the breeders and watch
the breeds in which you are interested.

The perfect pear
I made the [Savory Pear Gruyère Tart]
last night for dinner and it was delicious
[“Pear-fection,” September ;;;;]. My husband is a meat-and-potatoes man and he
had a second helping! I wasn’t sure he would
even taste it. Keep the recipes coming—I
have made several of them.

AFib awareness
I found it interesting that AFib (atrial
;brillation) wasn’t listed in either category,
urgent or emergency care [“Urgent or emergency?” September ;;;;], and then turned
the page to see September is Atrial Fibrillation Awareness Month. So many people
have AFib, and it can be life-threatening.
Call your doctor if it occurs.

Fueling
Conversation
Tim Hurlocker
Director of Fuel
Quality & Compliance
In May of this
year, Forbes
magazine named
Costco America’s
best large employer.
(See Forbes.com; search
“America’s best employers”).
This is no surprise
to me, as I’ve been
with Costco for
over 27 years. Our
employee turnover
is the lowest in the
retail industry.
Low employee turnover makes many
good things possible, particularly at
Costco gas stations. Extensive company
training and daily experience make our
gas station attendants very capable in
the vital areas of safety, environmental
protection and, of course, member
service. Behind each attendant is a
warehouse full of experienced staff
managers ready to help with any
emergency. Our friendly attendants
become a visible part of the community,
providing cheerful assistance, a clean
station and help to the elderly and
disabled. Their daily efforts have earned
Costco an outstanding safety and
compliance record over the 22 years
we’ve been in the fuel business.
A ;ne example is Elna Williams,
gas station supervisor at the Costco
in Vallejo, California. Elna has been
in charge of this busy facility since
it opened in 1999. In her long tenure
she’s seen prices rise and fall, the
introduction of the Kirkland Signature™
detergent additive program, complex
government regulations and a host
of other changes.
What hasn’t
changed is Elna’s
commitment to
member service,
each and
every day. ;
