Here’s to quirky
leading characters!
From movies to TV
to, especially, books,
these outside-of-the-norm people help us
recognize our own
di;culties dealing
with life’s challenges.
After living
in self-imposed
seclusion, Eleanor
Oliphant meets her
company’s IT guy.
Together they help
a man who has fallen,
and from there the
three find friendship
and a way out of their
lonely lives.
What I like most
about quirky characters is that they help
show the need for
connection we all
share. Eleanor is
no exception.

npublished writers often work away for
years, drafting book after book until a
publisher bites. Gail Honeyman’s experience was the complete opposite.
Publishers fought over her debut novel, Eleanor
Oliphant Is Completely Fine, which has sold more
than ;;;,;;; copies in the U.S. and has been
translated into more than ;; languages. It is also
long-listed for the UK’s Women’s Prize for Fiction
(the winner will be announced on June ;), and the
movie rights have been sold to actress and producer
Reese Witherspoon’s production company.
Eleanor Oliphant is a ;;-year-old woman who is
living a simple yet lonely life when an act of kindness
ends up changing her world. She must learn how to
navigate a new reality while also facing her past.
The book developed more out of a love of writing
than a quest for success. Honeyman, ;;, had always
enjoyed writing as a child but put her hobby to the
side as she completed her studies and began her
career. In the back of her mind, she hoped that one
day she would write a novel.
Around the time she turned ;;, while working at
the University of Glasgow in postgraduate administration, she decided that it was time to stop putting
it off. She wrote short fiction as a first step back into
UUnplanned
