ependability, culinary creativity and
memories: a great combination. The
iconic KitchenAid stand mixer has
withstood the test of time, and now
kicks off a yearlong celebration to commemo-
rate its centennial in ;;;;.
Back in the early ;;;;s, Herbert Johnston,
an engineer for the Hobart Corporation, was
inspired by watching a baker mix bread dough
by hand with a spoon; he thought there had to
be a better way to perform the task. He developed a commercial mixer that became standard equipment on all U.S. Navy ships in ;;;;,
which prompted the development of home
models. Because of the expense of selling in
department stores, stand mixers were sold
door-to-door by a largely female sales force,
and the rest is history.
What makes the KitchenAid stand mixer a
must-have item for so many people? Its ease of
use and, thanks to the array of attachments, an
amazingly versatile range of skills. Most people
know it’s a whiz at mixing up batters for cakes,
cookies and breads, but you can also use it to
create homemade pastas, spiralize vegetables,
make fresh juice, grind meat and pack your
own sausages, make ice cream and more.
“ I use my KitchenAid stand mixer
all the time. My kids love the cookies
I make with the mixer, but I also make
bread, spinach lasagna and meat-
balls.”—Mary Ellen Nobel Durchholz,

ager for KitchenAid Small Appliances. While
his time with the company doesn’t go back
to the beginning, he appreciates the mixer’s
iconic nature.
