assos Group, a Costco supplier for
more than ;; years, has been
providing people with the unique
taste of top-quality olives grown
in the rich soils of Greece.
Tassos Chronopoulos, The Tassos
Group founder and CEO, says he started
production in Greece as a way to merge
his past and present.
A seed is planted and grown
Chronopoulos came to the U.S. from
Athens, Greece, in ;;;; and graduated
from the Illinois Institute of Technology
with a degree in mechanical and aerospace engineering.
In ;;;;, he had retired from his
career as a designer and real estate developer. That same year, his father paid him
The younger Chronopoulos had built
and gifted a peace monument to the city
of Palos Heights, Illinois, in honor of the
military men and women who had sacri-
ficed their lives during conflict. Proud of
his son’s achievement, and this symbol of
appreciation for his son’s adopted coun-
try, his father asked, “But what have you
done for your birthplace, Greece?”
A few months later, Chronopoulos’
father passed away. While at his funeral
in Athens, looking at the surrounding
olive trees, “I knew then and there my
second career would be entwined with
the olive tree,” Chronopoulos says.
After much research and develop-
ment, Chronopoulos decided to only
source olives protected by laws and regu-
lations to ensure quality and authenticity.
In ;;;;, The Tassos Group released
its first product: extra-virgin olive oil.
This was followed by pitted Kalamata
olives, stuffed and double-stuffed olives
and olive bruschettas. Today, the company’s products are sold around the world.
The taste of authenticity
Tassos olives are selected from different regions, dependent on each one’s
attributes: Halkidki, for its delicious and
large olives—perfect for stuffing—and
Kalamata olives from the Kalamata
region only, for their larger, meatier size
and denser texture and flavor. The company’s large red and yellow roasted
Florina peppers are from the mountainous region of Macedonia. Success isn’t in
variety alone: All are grown, harvested
and processed by traditional practices.
Paying homage to family and country
The Tassos Group is owned and operated by Chronopoulos; his daughter,
Anna; and Michael, one of his two sons.
“I found a way to answer my father’s
question and marry the country of my
birth and the country of my heart,” says
Chronopoulos. “What more glorious banner could I have taken up?”
