Buyer, Books
Like everyone else
who fell in love with
the book The Book
Thief, I was beside
myself with excitement when I learned
that, after more than
a decade, Markus
Zusak had a new
book coming out: this
month’s book buyer’s
pick, Bridge of Clay.
Moving back
and forth through
time, the book tells
the story of the
Dunbar boys and
their parents. At the
center of it all is Clay.
When he decides to
help their father “the
murderer,” it puts
him, his siblings and
their father on a path
to understanding and
redemption.
In short: It was
worth the wait.
Bridge of Clay

is available in most
Costco warehouses.
hen the Connection last spoke with
author Markus Zusak—we interviewed
him in ;;;; about The Book Thief—he
was finishing up his first U.S. book tour
and was just months away from becoming a first-
time father. At the time he said he was working on
a book that he thought would be his best idea.
Zusak has spent the last ;;-plus years shaping
that “best idea” into Bridge of Clay, this month’s
book buyer’s pick. The long-awaited novel tells the
story of the five Dunbar brothers.
Clay, who is second to youngest, is determined
to build a physical bridge to aid his father during the
rainy season. At the same time, the story explores
the metaphorical bridge he’s creating to connect the
brothers with their father—and Clay with the past
and future.
Bridge building
Zusak, ;;, explains from his home in Australia
that the idea for the story first came to him more
than two decades ago. “I was thinking of a bridge
and a boy who wanted to achieve something great.
What if he wanted to build a bridge?” he says. “What
if that boy wanted to be able to walk across it in a
flood so that it looked like he was walking on water?
