Ready to retire?
ver the years, I have noticed new words
entering my conversations with family
and friends that announce the arrival at
a stage of life. These words have always
caused me to pause and observe, “Oh, so this is
what’s going on now at age XX.” They’re the sign-
posts of life: engagement, due date, anniversary,
mortgage, daughter-in-law, grandkid, eulogy. And
lately, more and more often, this one: retirement.
Many co-workers and friends have reached
this milestone, and it’s been fascinating to watch
how each has approached becoming a “retiree”
(another new word that feels odd to say). Some
appear to have transitioned without a hitch—after
all, as one friend commented, “every day feels like
Saturday.” But others have struggled to adapt to a
day without constant pressure, deadlines, responsibilities and the urgency that defined who they were
in the workplace. Most say they don’t miss the daily
grind and hardships of work, but the people.
The goal behind our cover story this issue is to
offer tips to help you make the most out of the years
after you leave the workplace. That includes information on how Costco can support this stage of your
life. We all work very hard to reach a point where we
don’t have to work every day. So shouldn’t we have
the best retirement ever?
The common theme among the experts we are
featuring this month is that your retirement can be
truly special if you prepare as much as possible. Find
out about Medicare, Social Security and those other
essentials. Spend some time examining your values
and strengths. Then go out and create the best life
for yourself, your family and your community.
It’s a once-in-a-lifetime chance.
